How to Make a Discord Server (Step by Step)
This guide walks through making a Discord server the right way — and shows how to skip the manual work entirely.
Free. No account. ServerForge creates every channel, role and permission inside your Discord in about 20 seconds.
1. Create the server
Open Discord, click the + at the bottom of your server list, choose Create My Own, then For me and my friends or For a club or community. Give it a name and an icon.
2. Plan your categories and channels
Group channels into 4–5 categories: a start-here section (welcome, rules, announcements), community chat, your main topic, events, and voice. Keep it lean at first — you can always add more.
3. Set up roles and permissions
Create Owner, Admin, Moderator and Member roles with colors. Make the rules and announcements channels read-only for members, and add a Muted role that can't send messages.
4. Write rules and a welcome message
Short, numbered rules work best. A pinned welcome message should tell new members where to start and how to get roles.
5. Add verification, self-roles and tickets
A verify button keeps raids out, self-roles let members pick what they see, and tickets give private support. These normally need extra bots.
6. Invite people
Create an invite link that never expires and share it where your audience already is: TikTok, YouTube, Instagram or your game.
The fast way: let ServerForge build it
ServerForge does steps 2 to 5 for you. Answer a few questions or describe your server, preview it, and it builds everything inside Discord in about 20 seconds.
- Create an empty server in Discord: + → Create My Own.
- Pick this template on ServerForge and change anything you like: name, channels, roles, rules.
- Add the ServerForge bot to that server through Discord's own approval screen.
- Watch it build. Categories, channels, roles, permissions, rules and a welcome message appear in about 20 seconds.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a Discord server for free?
Open Discord, press + in the server list, choose Create My Own, name it, then set up channels and roles — or let ServerForge build the full layout for free in about 20 seconds.
How many channels should a new Discord server have?
Start small: around 10–20 channels in 4–5 categories. Too many empty channels makes a new server feel dead.
What roles should a Discord server have?
Owner, Admin, Moderator and Member at minimum, plus a Muted role and optional fun or self-assign roles.
How do I make my Discord server look professional?
Use emoji category names, consistent channel naming, colored roles, a server icon and banner, a clear rules channel and a welcome message.
